Air pollution in New Mexico is a major public health concern, leading to premature deaths or crippling illnesses including asthma, heart and lung disease or allergies and lifelong respiratory issues. It can rob children of their futures and adults of a meaningful, healthy life.

Ambient air monitoring measures air flowing through regions and measures certain air borne contaminants like Ozone and Particulate Matter 2.5.and 10.  Air pollutants such as nitrogen oxides (NOx), sulfur dioxide (SO2), particulate matter (PM), volatile organic compounds, and air toxics. These pollutants affect breathing, heart functions, and neurological systems, and can cause premature deaths and adverse birth outcomes in populations exposed to them.–

Although more data is needed, according to the EPA Air Toxic Report, air pollution in NATIONWIDE KILLS 200,000-300,000 A YEAR AND it is estimated to contribute to more than 1,000 premature deaths each year in our state, with marginalized, already overburdened communities suffering the worst consequences.

In New Mexico, an estimated 1,100 premature deaths are attributed to PM 2.5 air pollution each year.” The analysis in a new Report released in June 2022 finds that stronger air pollution limits would save thousands of lives each year and deliver significant health benefits, especially for Black, Hispanic and low-income communities.
